Big Canopy Campout is privileged to have the opportunity to offer these local hand crafted and ceremonial jewellery direct from the Siekoya Remolino community.
ALL PROFITS go directly back to the community.
This necklace was made by a craftsperson from the Siekopai nationality an indigenous people living in a remote part of Ecuador’s northern Amazon region renowned for their shamanic acumen and knowledge of medicinal plants, with uses for over 1,000 different plants.
These necklaces are made with seeds and natural chambira fibre sustainably harvested within their territory. They form part of the traditional dress, along with crowns and arm bands made of leaves and flowers. These styles of necklace are for ceremonies and parties.
The Siekopai are under enormous pressure to fell the rainforest to plant oil palm, and to allow the state oil company to build a road through their territory, which would allow them to exploit the Amazon all the way to the border with Peru. Other Siekopai communities have succumbed to this pressure, but the community of Siekoya Remolino continues to peacefully resist exploitation within their territory.
By buying this necklace, you are providing us with a sustainable source of income that supports a number of families within our community. This allows us to keep defending the Amazon and our ancestral way of life.
